My Doom Essay

What you are about to read is an extra credit assignment I did a few years ago. The goal was to write a one page essay about anything I wanted, only using one syllable words. It was actually harder than it looks. I do not know what my score was since I never got my paper back. But I got an A in the class so it must have been good. Anyways, I thought it would be neat to share this with you all.

Doom
This game. This Doom. As a kid, I played it as if it was church. Like some god nut. But it was a game. Yes a game. A game that told me that gore and blood is new. Not much to it. Just point and shoot. Hell yeah. Bang, boom. Its head is blown to bits. As a kid, I was stoke. A new look for games. The age of the run and gun has come. It was also the start of things to come.
Mom and dad did not like this game. They would hide my game just to keep me at bay. A church type mom and dad they are. But they did not know of my stash. The thing I craved.
Through the depths of mars. A dark maze one must go. To save the earth and man. One by one, they come. Two by two they come. Ten by ten they come. From the left a roar, from the right a screech. There is a tool at hand. Its a gun. Its a big gun. Bang bang boom, you take them down. Find the keys to leave the zone. Just to start the next maze of Doom.
When all is lost, do not fret. For your fist is at hand. Punch its face in, where they stand. With the black box, your strength will grow. They will end up in a pool of gore. The treats that it has, is part of the game. Health points, and guns hide in doors. Creeps guard them though. Nice, more to kill. Let me just aim and shoot. Don't stand in my way. Not one thing will live if you do. Bang, bang bang, one two three, in the head. Long gone its head it is. Too bad, the brown spiked imp did not see it come.
In the depths of hell I am. Pain and screams there is. Just a game I say. But now there is fear at play. But play I must to end it. Or else I will have to rent it once more. And that will be bore. Hell no I say. The dark gods will not have their way. This game is too cool to quit. Plus I paid five bucks for a three day kill spree. Boy, does this game make me feel free.
Here I am now. Next to the beast. Four long legs and a boom stick to boot. I have no choice but to aim and shoot. Its not going down, sin is its fuel. I bet the man who made this game is cruel. None the less, a fight I am in. Must save my ass, that is the rule. Shoot shoot shoot, that is what I do.  The beast go's down in a pool of blood. Mom and dad tell me that this is a waste. That's what they said when I ate the paste. Though I was like five. Doom came at me when I was 10.
Now that I am old, this game, this Doom is part of my life. Mods on the web makes my day. With ones like thy, I play. Over the net I say yay. Though the lag sucks, its still a fray. This game to this day, still makes me gay.

Gaming today

Now that I got that out of the way, I think is time for me to share my thoughts on certain matters concerning the current state of video games. This past E3 I realized that video games are not going to get any better. If anything, we are going to get more of the same. Another dull generation if you ask me. If you need examples just look at both Sony and Microsoft's conferences. They are either sequels or spinoffs of already established franchises. The only game that peaked my interest in a big way is Killer Instinct.

Killer Instinct. I have fond memories playing that game on the Super Nintendo at my friend's house. Pulling off combos for hours. Until we manage to perform a Ultra. Man! those were the days. Unbeknownst to me, that there was an arcade scene, with another groups of friends, doing the same thing. The only difference, was that they were huddled next to an arcade machine instead of TV screen. Somehow that game brought people together, like many others. There was a sense of community. People you could share info with, and exchange game strategies. The same could be said with many other games at the time. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, Mario, and Contra.

But now.... It's not the same. We as gamers lost something special over these past generations. Gradually, we lost our arcade roots. The only place where we could see and play the latest and greatest before they got home ports. Although, I could tell it was coming since the Dreamcast manage to get arcade perfect ports of 3rd Strike and King of Fighters.

Nowadays, if you want to play against somebody, just log on to PSN or Xbox live and have a go at it. However, most of the time, you'll hear a bunch of whiners threatening you with murder and racial slurs. Not a very friendly environment. Back in the day you'd have your ass kicked if you said anything like that in a arcade.

The anonymity of the internet i guess brings out the asshole in people.

What brought this up, was when I had John and Chris over to record our last podcast, I forced them to play Contra. Seeing them miserably fail on the first stage cheered me up. Yeah... I know. Its kinda messed up. But having them there brought back a joy that I have been missing for a long time. We then played Metal Gear and Resident Evil. It was like high school all over again. Just me and a bunch of friends, breaking each others balls and talking about upcoming video games.

I feel that we lost that sense of community since the arrival of Xbox Live back in 2002. And with another Battlefield and Call of Duty down the line, I don't see gaming changing for the better anytime soon. (Or maybe its just the nostalgia talking.)

Another release

Got our second episode out. It has to do with Konami and Survival horror games. It's an interesting subject since we are fans of the Metal Gear.

We had our friend John from work to chime in. However, he seems a little off. Doesn't have much to say.

Oh yeah.... I almost forgot. Both John and Chris never played any Contra title after recording. So I had them play Alien wars on the SNES. Watching them was awesome. Makes me question whether they are gamers or not. Here's the link.
